TO GO WITH AFP STORY by RICHARD CARTER - View of the "Hall of the Supreme SS Leaders", a circular room supported by 12 stone pillars with a mysterious occult symbol known as the "schwarze Sonne" or "black sun" in the floor, designed in one of the Wewelsburg castle's towers by SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and part of the "Ideology and Terror of the SS" exhibition at Wewelsburg castle (Schloss Wewelsburg) near Paderborn, April 12, 2010. The circular crypt had a gas pipe in the floor for an eternal flame, a swastika on the ceiling and 12 pedestals at even intervals around the walls. The castle designed by SS leader Heinrich Himmler to be the spiritual home of the Nazi global empire after World War II, houses the world's first exhibition about Adolf Hitler's murderous SS. The seven-million euro (10-million-dollar) exhibition contains 1,000 pieces charting the history of the SS as it developed from Hitler's elite guard to a band of more than a million that committed unspeakable crimes across Europe.
