The killing of elephants for their ivory tusks is one of the biggest reason for the loss but legal and illegal land clearing, especially for oil palm plantations, is fragmenting critically endangered elephants' habitat in Asian countries. Palm oilthe basis of products such as cosmetics and shampoos, processed foods and biodieselis versatile and has a long shelf life, but oil palm plantations gobble up forests and destroy habitat for elephants, orangutans and other endangered animals.
