Canadian Landing At Dieppe: Landing Craft In The Channel

FRANCE - JANUARY 01: August 19, 1942. Off the coast of Dieppe in Normandy, British Navy landing craft try to land on the French coast controlled by the Germans. That day 5000 Canadian soldiers, 1100 English and 50 Americans set off in the hope of breaking through the German lines. In fact, for the Allied chief of staff, it was a question of testing the continental defenses. 4000 men were killed, wounded or made prisoner. Only a very few were able to be re-embarked and escape the carnage. (Photo by Keystone-France/Gamma-Keystone via Getty Images)
