Sicily Holy Week Easter Processions
PIANA DEGLI ALBANESI, ITALY - APRIL 11: Arbereshe elderly talk in front of a caffe before the Easter Sunday Holy Mass April 11, 2004 in Piana degli Albanesi, Sicily, Italy. Piana degli Albanesi, with approximately 6,000 Arberereshe residents, is the most important of the five Albanian settlements in Sicily. The Arberereshe are the decendents of Albanians who immigrated to Sicily during the 15th century after the Turkish invasion in Albania. All the residents still keep their traditions and speak Arberes which will soon be taught in schools. On Holy Easter Sunday after Mass, the girls continue the Greek-byzantine rite where girls, dressed in their traditional Arbereshe costumes, walk in procession along the streets of the village called the Procession Of The Misteri where they deliver consecrated red eggs.
