IN THIS PHOTO: Ames, Iowa, Tuesday, 5/23/2001. Pathologist Thomas Gidlewski examines the riddled brain of a diseased deer on this magnified view of a microscope slide. The white circular shapes are the sponge-like holes found with prion-related diseases called transmissable spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). The deer had a type of TSE, called Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which is similar to mad cow disease.
