Artificial Wave Park for Surfers in San Diego

377157 02: After falling from his surfboard (see previous photo), Dan Gruno manages to stay in the wave by bodysurfing it while riding the stationary artificial wave dubbed "Bruticus Maximus," August 27, 2000 at Mission Beach in San Diego, CA. Bruticus Maximus creates a tubular wave that can reach up to a height of 10 feet, fed by four jets displacing about 100,000 gallons per minute at a speed of 35 miles-per-hour. It is the largest and most serious of the stationary waves that inventor Thomas Lochtefeld has built. He has built tamer versions for more average surfers in theme parks throughout the world.
