  • Lyrics: I Can’t Help It (If I’m White) I was born the day after Leadbelly died. I grew up with his records on the upper west side. I wore ’em out, played ‘em day and night. And sang along with all my might. One day the teacher told my mother there was something wrong. When all the little children went to sing a song- “Elly’s voice,” she said, “just doesn’t sound right.” I think she meant I didn’t sound white. You know, Leroy Carr and Reverend Gary D, Blind Lemon Jefferson sound good to me. I picked those licks until I got them right. I didn’t know from black or white. Well I know this land is your land, & that land is mine. But I like your land better cause the music’s so fine. I play what I play, it just feels right. I can’t help it if I’m white. Instrumental (2 verses, from the top) Well now Rick Von Schmidt and good old David B. Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block- they’re all white like me. The blues is a feeling late at night If you close your eyes maybe you’ll see the light. Well I know this land is your land, & that land is mine. But I like your land better ‘cause the music’s so fine. I can’t help it if I don’t look right. I can’t help it if I’m white – I didn’t ask to be- I just can’t help it if I’m white.
