Raised in a Cuban-Jamaican family, Lucresia was brought up in a household where their only salvation during the hard times was turning to music. Lucresia’s parents made sure that their three children were fed a daily diet of music, art and confidence. Says Lucresia, “My father taught me how to read at the age of three by using newspapers and liner notes on the back of his favorite albums. Country, reggae and soul music ruled in my house. He always said to respect country music artists because they don’t sing foolishness; there is always a story within the song.”
And it was from her mother she learned the showmanship of the performance. Remembers the singer, “By the time I had my first public performance at six, my mother had already taught me what points of the song to bat my eye lashes, close my eyes or sway with my arms hold out to the audience.”
Even when she was young and singing trivial pop songs, her unique tone and emotional commitment made her performances special. It was a chance meeting with a teacher that encouraged Lucresia to go into jazz. Exposing her to vast catalogs of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, Lucresia began to come up with her own unique diction, imitable phrasing and acute dramatic intensity with every note sung. She got into a habit of detaching her melody line from the ground beat then stretching and condensing the figures of the melody.
Lucresia began taking on more key public events such as launching of FLOW 93.5 radio station, Honey Jam showcases and going on to win two Much Music Videofact and Promofact awards two years in a row. She realized that both melody and lyrics came very easily to her. And what comes out is a candid picture of a complex young woman dealing with love and self-respect.
To explain the sense of overpowering drama that is featured in her songs, she believes, "that I have to live that life in order to sing truthfully about it, so I live hard and I love even harder.”
Lucresia has proven herself to be a versatile performer, writer and producer. Her immense talent has allowed her to break new creative ground by successfully integrating her love of jazz, hip-hop, pop and swing. She is strong, forthright and intelligent, while retaining a delicate sensitive balance.
