Sam Mukoro
Lawrenceville, GA United States
Genres:Reggae/Dub, World - Island, World - African
Bio:
Sam Mukoro was born in the Delta State of Nigeria where he spent most of his early childhood. His exposure to music then was somewhat limited to hearing it play on their neighbor’s radio. The family eventually acquired a transistor radio which to him was great delight.
On completing his secondary education, Sam had more latitude to explore his passion for music. One way to go was getting involved in music business by promoting disco shows and flirting with being a DJ in Warri. He was bitten by the music bug much earlier but somehow kept it under wrap because of his pursuit of academics. While at the University of Port Harcourt, he composed the anthem for his Slate (equivalent of Political Party) which eventually won the Students union elections and he served as Secretary General for the 1981/82 session. With his first Degree in Geography, he proceeded to University of Ibadan where he got a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning.
In the late 80s Sam found himself lecturing at Auchi Polytechnic where he reinvigorated the Students Band on campus called PM Jam. He performed at concerts and blended so well with the students that the popularity of the band soared. They became the talk of the town and other campuses around.
For some reason however, people could not relate the Sam they saw on stage with the one they saw in the street because of his gentle and reserved appearance. There was this incidence once when he was traveling in a public transport with a student who naturally assumed he was a student. In course of the trip, they got talking and the issue of the campus band came up. This student started talking animatedly about this lecturer called Sam who wows the crowd on stage and lots more. Sam asked if he could recognize Sam if they met, he said “sure”. Sam smiled and asked “what about if I tell you that I am the Sam you have been talking bout” ……….
Over time Sam transferred his services from Auchi Polytechnic to The Federal University of Technology Akure. While there he put together a Students Band called The Spanners. He has all this time been writing songs and entertaining his close friends and family with them.
