A southern copperhead, agkistrodon contortrix contortrix, rests in an ambush position on dried leaves between two root buttresses. Southern copperheads are venomous pit vipers that are native to most of the eastern and some of the midwestern portions of the united states. Copperheads will often sit next to a trail, that is used by animals that it eats, waiting for it's prey to walk by. It will then bite it's prey injecting it's venom and when the venom kills or immobilizes the animal the copperhead will eat it.
