This magnificent canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was carved by the erosional power of the Colorado River over a period of at least 17 million years. It is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and over 1 mile (1.6 km) deep. From top to bottom, its steep sides expose rocks that have formed over a period of more than two billion years making it a prime site for the study of geological processes and history.
