The lake is surrounded by the mountainous South West of Macedonia and eastern Albania. It is one of Europe's deepest lakes, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem (more than 200 endemic species). It is part if UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1979.
Lake Ohrid is also one of the most popular tourist destination in the Republic of Macedonia.
