The Wailing or Western Wall is believed to be a part of the original wall built by Solomon in 970 B.C., but it may have been rebuilt by Herod. Since the Middle Ages, Jews have been gathering by this wall to bewail the fall of the city and the destruction of Solomon's Temple in 597-586 B.C. and in 70 and 135 A.D.
