The Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG opened the Zollern in 1898 as a model colliery. In 1969, three years after its closure, the colliery was listed as Germany's first technical building monument of international importance. As of 1981, it has been the headquarters of the Westphalian Industrial Museum.
