Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris)

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), is known as a subspecies of the West Indian manatee. These animals are frequently seen during the winter in the warm water of the Crystal River at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. The aquatic mammal is gentle in nature and will readily approach humans offering fresh water or certain types of food, such as lettuce as they are herbivores. Since they are mammals, the manatee must often come to the surface of the water to breathe.
