Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore, west Africa's top mediator for the crisis, hosted the meeting in Ouagadougou, and brought together a Malian government delegation with representatives of Ansar Dine (Defenders of the Faith), one of the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist groups occupying the north, and the Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA), which is fighting for an independent homeland for the Tuareg people.
