One third of the buildings in the neighborhood are being demolished for an Olympic stadium, the gondola and other 'improvements' by the government. Many residents fear city planners are trying to upgrade this lower-class neighborhood near downtown to a middle class area where the poor will be pushed out. The gondola will probably not be convenient for many in the area. Favelas are informal settlements, traditionally without electricity, water and sewage services.
