Some 500 people, mostly Nazi regime opponents, were incarcerated (though unofficial estimations put the number to 2.000), beaten up and tortured in the SA Prison Papestrasse, located in the former barracks of the Prussian Railway Regiment). Inmates are known to have died in the prison, or as a result of their maltreatment there. The prison stands as an early example of what later became systematic and organised terror.
