In 1964, a woman named Catherine Genovese (better known as Kitty) was murdered by Winston Moseley (who was later convicted for the crime), who attack her in several nearby locations, including in a small hallway behind the illuminated door at left. The case was sensationalized at the time due to the supposed indifference of witnesses thought to have seen the murder and done nothing to help Genovese or to call the police.
