Premier Dalton McGuinty will mark Earth Day by announcing a province-wide ban on the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides for gardening. Keeping a cornerstone promise of his successful Oct. 10 re-election campaign, McGuinty is building upon a city of Toronto prohibition on pesticides to kill dandelions and other weeds. The Liberal governments legislation would go further by not just curbing use of such toxic substances, but banning the sale of them outright in Ontario. It is expected to take effect by next spring. There would also be loopholes to allow spraying in event of emergencies like an outbreak of West Nile virus. in Toronto, April 21, 2008.
