GATUN, PANAMA - FEBRUARY 12, 2013: The Panama Canal Expansion Program (La Ampliación del Canal de Panamá) received funding to begin the USD $5.25-billion program in December 2006, and construction began in September 2007. The program includes building two new sets of locks, dredging and widening the Gatún Lake (Lago Gatún) and the Culebra Cut (also known as Gaillard Cut), and dry excavation projects connecting the Pacific locks and Culebra Cut.
