Patrol boats, underwater chain-link fences, and ship barricades were used to create a water border with West Berlin, since boaters, swimmers tried time and again to reach the West via the Spree.The East Harbour section of the River Spree Site of the Mediaspree area was primarily occupied by industry and trade. Mediaspree is one of the largest property investment projects in Berlin. Many of the buildings still standing date from this period and are characteristic of the architecture of that era.
