Professor Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904) was a French physicist. As Professor at the College de France from 1868, he pioneered scientific cinematography with his studies of animal movement. He invented a number of improvements in camera design and succeeded in reducing exposure time to the region of 1/25,000 of a second for the purpose of photographing the flight of insects.
