All Aboard the Toy Train
WEST BENGAL, INDIA - 2007/12/04: A schoolboy catches a free ride in the doorway of the passenger compartment of the Toy Train as it makes its way uphill through the Himalayan foothills to Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, commonly known as the "Toy Train," is a narrow gauge railway connecting Siliguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. The route covers 86 km, was built between 1879 and 1881, rises from 100 meters at Siliguri to 2,200 meters at Darjeeling and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It is a tourist attraction for train buffs from around the globe. Originally pulled by a coal-fired steam engine, the train now runs primarily on a diesel engine, the steam engine only being used for short trips between Darjeeling and nearby Ghoom..
