WFP targets to offer lunch to about 215,000 children, in 1138 schools, all in the South of Madagascar. This consists especially of corn based food, and it costs about 50 USD per child for the whole school year. Over 4 million children are enrolled in primary school, according to UN data from the school year 2010/2011. About 500,000 children had abandoned school in Madagascar in the period 2008-2012 due to degradation of the school system performance.
