Exxon Valdez At Shipyard For Repair

(Original Caption) 11/18/1989-San Diego, CA- The oil tanker that created the worst oil spill in U.S. history, the Exxon Valdez, sits high and dry after three months in drydock at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. Workers have cut off the lower bow and removed 1,600 tons of damaged steel to form a tunnel 650' long at the center of the ship's hull. The shipyard that originally built the Exxon Valdez in 1985 expects repairs to be completed this summer.
