The 'Read-Aloud' day is celebrated worldwide to show that the right to read and write is an entitlement to all. More than 300 schools, human rights clubs and libraries across the country today participated in the event which in Kenya was aimed at promoting ethnic tolerance and equality ahead of Kenya's general election in March, which historically has been an event fraught with ethnic tensions. 12 percent of children in primary schools in Kenya have actively been part of a conversation about kicking another ethnic community out of their neighbourhood, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission and 37 percent believe that its best to have friends from their own tribe only while a third of these children believe their tribe superior to others.
