A protester holds on June 17, 2012 a placard comparing Hungarian World War II-era leader Miklos Horthy with German dictator Adolf Hitler and reading: 'There are some who argue that Hitler's last shield bearer was Horthy,' on Heroes square in Budapest. A bust statue of Horthy was unveiled on June 16 in the historical settlement of Csokako. Horthy's defenders say he brought stability to the country during hard times after World War I, when Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory to its neighbors. His critics condemn the leader, in power from 1920 to 1944, for backing anti-Semitic legislation and for deporting more tha 500,000 Jews and Roma to camps during his alliance with Nazi Germany.
