Obama was to meet Republican and Democratic congressional leaders Monday at the White House, stepping up efforts to reach a deal to head off a historic debt default. Obama will hold the meeting at 1900 GMT and make clear 'the need for Congress to act to pay our bills,' a White House official said on condition of anonymity. With just three days before the US Treasury exhausts its borrowing authority, and the government entering its third week of a crippling shutdown, lawmakers have scrambled to work out a deal that would resolve both crises.
