Caption: Police officers patrol the poor community of Las Ayestas, in Tegucigalpa on February 5, 2013. Honduras' notorious street gangs, especially the Mara 18 and the Mara 13 or Salvatrucha, have imposed a curfew and are charging a 'war tax' in some of the capital's poorest sectors -- thing which led the police to deploy more personnel in theses areas. The violent maras are active in murders, extorsion, drug dealing, arms trafficking and other crimes. The United Nations says Honduras, a country plagued by powerful street gangs and drug-related violence, has the world's highest homicide rate. In 2010 it was 82 per 100,000 inhabitants, and rose to 86 in 2011. By comparison, in drug-cartel-plagued Mexico, for instance, the rate was about 18 in 2010.
