Around a thousand people marched under heavy police guard to protest against government's economic recovery policies that have been blamed for the currency devaluation and high consumer prices. Authorities deployed 3,000 police on the streets of major cities ahead of the march, fearing a repeat of nationwide rioting and looting in 2011 that left 19 people dead. Many Malawians are feeling the pinch from economic reforms that Banda instituted after coming to power last April, including the devaluation of the national currency and spending cuts.The reforms, which are backed by the IMF, drew international praise for the impoverished country's 'courageous' action.
