Many tourists visiting the site pose for photos there as part of their battlefield experience. The original historic image was taken there by Alexander Gardner on July 5, 1863 and featured a dead Confederate soldier with a rifle proped next to him. The photograph was later discovered to be staged, the dead body of the 'sharpshooter' having been brought from another place on the battlefield for the photograph and the gun not a sharps rifle.
