Traditionally outcast by state radio and television, independent music acts in Beijing continue to pack out the city's many 'livehouse' venues where ear-splitting bands and hard-rocking fans represent a flourishing underground live music scene irrespective of the night of the week. However, major record deals are elusive and while available sales data is thin, bands get by on what they make from concerts and fairly low-level CD sales in a market notorious for piracy.
