People walk on September 24, 2013 past the Champs-Elysees store of French suparmarket chain Monoprix in Paris. French cosmetics maker Sephora said on September 24 it would appeal a court order to close its flagship Paris store by 9 p.m. after it became the latest casualty of a much-contested law banning late-night work. The ruling against Sephora follows a string of similar union-initiated moves against Apple, Japanese casual wear designer Uniqlo, Monoprix and the department store Galeries Lafayette. In a case that has reignited debate over French attitudes to work, employees of the the store have attacked the unions who brought the case for preventing them from opting to work longer hours in return for extra pay at a time of record unemployment.
