Colombia on Wednesday said it would no longer recognize the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) jurisdiction in border disputes following a recent ruling that redrew its maritime boundary with Nicaragua. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said that the country's territorial and marine boundaries should be established through treaties, and not through sentences handed down by the court of the Hague. The UN International Court of Justice recently awarded sovereignty over a group of Caribbean islands to Colombia, while granting a large swathe of sea territory to Nicaragua in a long-running dispute between the two countries. The ICJ ruled in the dispute over the oil-and fish-rich region that the maritime frontier between the two countries should be moved east, marking a territorial gain for Nicaragua.
