Until 1864 many of the GWR's locomotives were designed by Gooch, who built a total of 340 engines for the railway at Swindon. A total of 29 locomotives of the Iron Duke class were built between 1847 and 1855. They were capable of speeds approaching 80 mph. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
