Using surgical tools, craft knives, pliers, tweezers and small saws, Brian Dettmer the 'book surgeon' creates literal art that sells for anywhere up to £18,000. Carving into single books or even full encyclopedias, Brian's surreal and expressive creations are made only from the books he uses as he cuts deep into the weighty tomes. Each surgery can take as little as one week for a single hardback, while a larger joined series of atlases or reference books can take Brian, 36, up to three months. Embellishing his completed sculptures by sanding and varnishing the finished work, Atlanta resident Brian has made over a hundred examples of his book art since 2003 and has been exhibited in New York, Barcelona and Chicago.
