This year, some 469 people were confered titles of professor and associate professor. Heavily influenced in the past by Confucian educational philosophy, Vietnam, where society still pays much attention and importance to diplomas and certificates, is known for having a higher number of PhDs than any other ASEAN country but its number of scientific research works published on international journals is smaller. According to official media the Southeast communist nation has not had any patents registered in the US in 2011 despite the country having more than 10,000 professors and associate professors who's qualifications amount to hundreds of thousands of PhD qualifications.
