Delegations from the Malian government and two rebel groups from the country's vast north held their first talks Tuesday to seek an end to the crisis that has split the west African the country in two. Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore, west Africa's top mediator for the crisis, hosted the meeting in Ouagadougou, and brought together a Malian government delegation with representatives of Ansar Dine (Defenders of the Faith), one of the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist groups occupying the north, and the Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA), which is fighting for an independent homeland for the Tuareg people.
