A worker, at the photographer's request, walks on scaffolding under the Wendelstein 7-X experimental fusion reactor at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics on October 29, 2013 in Greifswald, Germany. Scientists hope to heat a miniscule amount of hydrogen to 100 million degrees in order to melt the atomic cores into helium, thereby releasing large amounts of energy in a similar way as the sun. Due to be completed in 2014, the reactor could help scientists to get closer towards creating atomic fusion-based commercial power, which would be clean and virtually inexhaustible, as hydrogen comes from water.

A person walks a dog on a section of boardwalk recently repaired at Rockaway Beach following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, which destroyed large parts of the boardwalk, on October 29, 2013 in the Queens borough of New York City. Today is the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Many residents of the Rockaways and neighboring Breezy Point are reflecting on the progress made over the past year while acknowledging the problems still evident. Hurricane Sandy made landfall on October 29 near Brigantine, New Jersey and affected 24 states from Florida to Maine and cost the country an estimated $65 billion.
