According to media reports out of the S-Bahn’s 1,100 train cars only 426 are in service. The others, according to S-Bahn officials, are in repair due to damage caused by the early and harsh winter weather this year. The shortfall in operating trains has led to longer waits for commuters and, in some cases, cancelled service altogether. The Berlin S-Bahn, a subsidiary of the German state rail carrier Deutsche Bahn, has been unable to keep its full fleet of trains operational for the last two years.
