Malaysia has long had an interest in the supernatural rooted in age-old legends. Horror films have become increasingly popular in recent years after effectively being banned in the Muslim-majority country for three decades for celebrating the other-worldly in violation of Islamic teachings. Since popular culture was allowed to relax in the past decade, horror movies have sprouted. In 2011, the genre made up more than a third of domestic movies.
