On July 13, the 18 tribal girls representing Yuwa India under-14 all-girls team were placed third among 10 teams playing for the Gasteiz Cup in Victoria Gasteiz in Spain. In 2012, Yuwa became the first organisation in India to win the Nike Gamechangers Award. Yuwa also won the NDTV Spirit of Sports Award, Times Now Amazing Indians Award. Set up in 2009 by Franz Gastler, its an NGO that uses football to combat child marriage and human trafficking in Jharkhands tribal belt. Gastler, a US citizen, started as an English teacher for underprivileged children when he was requested by the girls to teach them football. He formed Yuwa India, a U-14 side with girls from local villages. Having started with 15 girls in 2009, Yuwa now has over 200 aspiring footballers. The Jharkhand government has announced it would build a stateof-the-art stadium on five acres of land for the Yuwa girls. Chief Minister Hemant Soren also announced cash awards of Rs 21,000 to each of the 18 girls who were in the squad.
