Josie Romero is a transgender child who was born a boy called Joey Romero. At four-years-old she started telling people she was a girl and wore colours like orange because it was nearest to pink. At five she refused to have her hair cut, and was often mistaken for a girl. Josie lived in Japan with her parents Venessia and Joseph, an engineer in the air force, until the age of six. The family's paediatrician told Venessia to look up the word 'transgender' and the family began researching children who want to change sex. Josie was given a female birth certificate, passport and social security number, grew her hair and dressed exclusively as a girl. The family faced prejudice from other parents on the conservative air force base who tried to prevent Josie going to school. The Romeros returned to Arizona two years ago and now Venessia home schools Josie and Jade. Josie will begin taking hormone blockers in a few months time before beginning female hormones at the age of 12. Josie and her family are dues to appear in a Channel 4 documentary called, 'Aged 8 And Wanting A Sex Change'. (Photo by Jeff Rayner / Barcroft USA / Getty Images)
