Italy's worst-ever refugee tragedy happened in the early hours of October 3 when a boat laden with Eritrean and Somali asylum-seekers caught fire, capsized with an estimated 500 people on board and sank within sight of the coast, killing 366 people. The ceremony also remembered those killed just days after the first shipwreck, when another boat sank off Malta.
