American Landscapes: Farewell to the Fallen

Gordon Smith, at left with the flag from his son's casket, hosts a memorial gathering for friends and family at his home. Smith's son, PFC Brandon Smith, a 20-year old Marine, was killed on his first day on assignment in Iraq, when his Humvee hit a landmine while rushing to support a convoy under mortar attack in Al Qaim. Brandon, a popular teenager in the town of Fayetville in northwestern Arkansas, had a premonition of his death, and had left his most valued possesions with his close friends. Brandon was buried with full military honors at the Fayetville National Cemetery. | Location: Fayetville, Arkansas, United States. (Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images)
