Violent clashes erupted between citizens and French police near Trappes' police station late on July 18, 2013, after police officers carried out an identity check on a full-face veiled woman and her husband. The woman's husband tried to strangle one of the officers during the check according to Versailles' prosecutor Vincent Leclous on July 20. The situation was still tense in front of the police station on the evening of July 21, where a group of people challenged the police before being dispersed by backup units.
