Penitents Celebrate Holy Week In Cordoba On Miercoles Santo

LUQUE, SPAIN - MARCH 29: Father Jesus Criado Caballero stands on the altar amid penitents of the Cofradia del Santisimo Cristo del Silencio y la Expiracion brotherhood inside their church at the end of a holy week procession on March 29, 2013 in Luque near Cordoba, Spain. The origin of this small brotherhood, which uses a skull with crossed shins prominently as their symbol, referring to the mortality and short duration of life but also to the triumph of Jesus over death, dates back to the fifties when a group of young catholic's came up with the idea of forming the brotherhood. Since its founding the brotherhood has a strict penitential character with one of its aims being the public prayer of the Stations of the Cross in the early hours of Good Friday through the streets of this small Andalusian town. Home to the brotherhood is the San Nicolas de Tolentino convent church which was founded in 1626 and dedicated to Our Lady of Grace. (Photo by Jasper Juinen/Getty Images)
