Cars drive past the Wohngenossenschaft Soldaritaet coop apartment buildings that are decorated with a 22,000 square meter mural on August 20, 2013 in Berlin, Germany. A group of artists working for French-based Citecreation painted the facades of the three buildings in imagery inspired by a nearby zoo and in cooperation with the buildings' residents. Citecreation has applied to the Guiness Book of World Records that the mural, which will be officially inaugurated on August 22, be considered as the largest mural on an inhabited building in the world.

Volcanic smoke spews from Mount Sakurajima on August 18, 2013 in Kagoshima, Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that Mount Sakurajima's volcanic ash was spewed to reach 5,000 meters into the sky. Massive amounts of ash covered Kagoshima City, prompting railway operators to temporarily stop train operations to remove ash from tracks. There were no reports of injuries.The volcano is located in the southern Japanese main island of Kyushu.
