Tunisian Border Town Prepares For Peak Migrant Season

ZARZIS, TUNISIA - JUNE 30: Crew members from the fishing vessel Youssri II, which rescued more than 30 migrants in 2015 unload their catch after arriving at port on June 30, 2016 in Zarzis, Tunisia. Since 2012, the Tunisian border town of Zarzis has dealt with the overflow of migrants from Libya. In 2015 with pressure from EU nations, Tunisia tightened its border security with Libya, cutting the number of migrants arriving in Tunisian border towns. Local fishermen from the Zarzis port who were trained in rescue techniques by MSF in 2015 after being involved in weekly rescues, have seen no rescues so far in 2016, primarily due to an increase in rescue boats from international NGOÕs, coastguards and military vessels patrolling the waters off the Libyan coast. However with an estimated 800,000 migrants waiting in Libya to attempt the dangerous crossing to Europe, preparations were made for an expected increase in rescues and arrivals to Tunisia ahead of the 2016 peak season (July-August) (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)
